Thanks for taking part in Slow Bike Race

To the editor:

The Coastal Trails Coalition would like to extend its gratitude to volunteers, riders and supporters of the Slow Bike Race on Wednesday, Aug. 1. In particular, we salute our major sponsors: the Tannery Marketplace, Chase & Lunt Insurance, Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, Institution for Savings, Riverside Cycles and David’s Tavern Restaurant. Thank you also to the wonderful Yankee Homecoming Committee for welcoming us into their week.

Brendan Banovic won First Place for being the slowest rider of all and Jean Paul Beck of Theater in the Open, aka “Mr. Peanut,” won the Judge’s Prize for best costume. Lisa Markowski, awarded the Grand Prize for being the highest fundraiser, was sponsored primarily by ERS, Inc., and Academy Communications. Grand Prize runner-up Scott Laffey’s major sponsors were Stone Ridge Properties and Ocean Employee Benefits. All prize packets contained gifts donated by other generous businesses including Elements Therapeutic Massage, Anchor Stone Pizza, Newburyport Screening Room, Actors Studio of Newburyport, Yankee Runner, Jabberwocky Bookshop, Amesbury Skate and Sport, Michael’s Harborside, Ale House, Brown Sugar Thai Restaurant, Haley’s Ice Cream, Chococoa Baking Company, and New England Chocolate Company.

Of special interest this year were the VIPs who kicked off the event, showing courage and good sportsmanship. Mayor Donna Holaday, Dr. Gail Fayre of Anna Jaques Hospital and Ann Ormond of the Newburyport Chamber “raced” in the first heat, followed by Amesbury Councilor Christian Scorzoni, John Macone of The Daily News and Newburyport Councilor Greg Earls, who won the VIP trophy, the Rusty Spike, from the rail line that is now the Old Eastern Marsh Trail in Salisbury.

The Coastal Trails Coalition is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization whose mission is to assist in the development of the Coastal Trails Network, a public system of bicycle and pedestrian trails connecting Amesbury, Newbury, Newburyport and Salisbury, and adjacent communities. These trails have been designated as sections of the East Coast Greenway that stretches from the U.S./Canadian border to Key West, and the Border-to-Boston shared-use trail. For additional information please visit coastaltrails.org.

Thank you again to all participants.
