What's happened to residential roads, sidewalks?

To the editor:

Have you noticed how well the roads and sidewalks are taken care of, along with two side streets off downtown Amesbury? Just recently the town did work on Elm Street as far as the Prime Gas Station.

New cement sidewalks! Guess where the improvements stopped? Where the residential homes start! Now look at the rest of the town. Over 90 percent of the residential area is neglected. Bad roads and very bad sidewalks.

One Amesbury councilor told me the money for downtown/Elm Street came from some state funding. While this may be true, why can’t our mayor get funding for improvements in the residential area?

It’s about time the City of Amesbury devotes some of our tax money, hopefully with the help of the state, to the residential parts of town. All the residents have seen is tar patches over tar patches. Look at Highland Street from Carver Street down to Route 110 — sidewalks that are in despicable shape, and a road that is more patches than actual road surface. Our tax dollars should work for everyone; residential areas need proper maintenance as well as downtown and business.

Please contact your councilor and/or our mayor and demand more attention to residential roads and sidewalks.
