Bridge naming a surprise to neighbors

To The editor:

Under the cloak of darkness ...

Well, the politicians on Beacon Hill have gone and done it again.

This time, at an unannounced ceremony held Friday afternoon (June 21), they put a name on the Parker River Bridge on Route 1A in Newbury. No locally publicized hearing. No local input. I guess we Newburyites, who live near the bridge, didn’t have “the need to know.”

A bridge has stood on this site for over 250 years and fared very well with no name, but that’s not good enough in today’s world.

And, whom did they name it after? Somebody prominent in town affairs? An historically significant Newbury name? Maybe someone well known to us river rats?

Not really. They named it after a deceased state DPW engineer from West Newbury. Now, no disrespect intended. I’m sure he was a great guy who did great things for the DPW, but, really, name something in West Newbury for him. Why couldn’t they could have waited until the Rocks Village bridge was completed and named that after him? I bet his family would have preferred that.

I guess the good news is there can’t be any important issues to burden our state Legislature. Really?? Our representative, Mr. Mirra, who lives in West Newbury, should have sought input from Newburyites before foisting this upon us.

Myself, and others I’ve talked to around the River — we’re still calling it the Parker River Bridge, and always will.
