To the editor:
I was disappointed to read the April 29 Daily News editorial promoting the anti-government, anti-poor an anti-immigrant, right wing conservative agenda. The editorial describes the food stamp assistance the parents of the two bombers received. This would normally be a legitimate, although minor news item. The Daily News editorial turned it into a conspiracy theory by stating that giving the Tsarnaev family food stamps qualifies the bombing as “state-sponsored terrorism” and the citizens should demand an answer.
“State sponsored terrorism?” Did The Daily News and its sister papers need to sink so low as to try to use the Marathon bombing as a way promote their opposition to food stamps, immigrants and government assistance? The between-the-lines messages of the editorial is that food stamps contributed to the bombing and without the food stamps there would have been no bombing; that immigrants come here to get free food; that the government sponsors terrorism because it gives out food stamps; and that giving food assistance to those in need is wrong.
The Daily News and other conservative news media have found a new way to stoke conservative fears by bringing out all the boogie men that send fear into the hearts of their followers. I think The Daily News readers deserve better than to have our local newspaper declare that food stamps are state-sponsored terrorism.
