Important meeting on nuclear plant tonight

To the Editor:

No More Fukushimas would like to encourage everyone who lives close to the Seabrook plant and is concerned about public safety to attend the Nuclear Regulatory Commission meeting being held in Hampton at the Best Western Plus, 815 Lafayette Road on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.

The public has been invited to hear discussion of the concrete degradation which has been found throughout the plant, to ask questions and to offer input. NRC and plant staff will be present as well as researchers from the University of Texas who are studying the concrete issue. Many of our elected officials are expected to attend, as well.

As you may know, the Seabrook reactor is experiencing a potentially serious problem resulting from widespread concrete degradation, which could jeopardize the structural integrity of the reactor and other critical safety-related buildings. The Union of Concerned Scientists is working with an independent concrete expert who has been monitoring and analyzing the issue and providing input to the NRC. He concludes that there are many unanswered questions that the NRC must address about the extent and severity of the problem, how it will progress, and what (if anything) can be done to resolve it.

This meeting is an important opportunity for the public and local, state, and federal policy makers to press the NRC and the reactor operator, NextEra, not to sugarcoat the problem nor provide false assurances. It needs to be stipulated that they conduct an exhaustive, transparent investigation and not rush to judgment nor move forward with the plant’s re-licensing application.
