To the Editor:
On Sunday, supporters and friends of Roof Over Head Collaborative came together for a benefit at The Port Tavern in Newburyport. The event was a sight to behold. The outpouring of generosity from our community was truly amazing. People and businesses were asked to “Build a House for Roof” and did they ever. A table full of beautiful gingerbread houses dazzled the attendees and some very lucky winners brought one home. The donations raised at the event will be used to support programming that provides transitional, supportive housing to at risk families in our community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Roof Over Head Collaborative, Inc., I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many, many people who braved the snow-covered streets to make our event a great success. Thank you to those who built gingerbread houses to raffle at the event: Abby Pierce and The Port Tavern, The Affolter Family, Anne Miller, Cindy Schartman and Orange Leaf. Those who donated raffle items: Walter and Anne Power, Christin Walth, Whole Foods, Tracey Fortier, Paul Olsen and Esther Sayer. Two tremendous auction items were donated: a golf outing donated by Rich and Sandy Hermann and a beautiful oil on canvas portrait by local artist Crystal Potter, who will “paint a house for Roof.” Finally, to those who showed to support ROOF, your kindness and generosity will have a tremendous impact -- thank you.
Thank you to Becky Kelly who organized a magical craft room and together with a team of volunteers helped many children build winter crafts. Thank you to our ROOF helpers Lauren and Sloan Strickler, Lucy and Anna Cameron, Timmy and Jack Perry, Ashley and Megan Veneto and Daniel Flynn. And a special thank you to David Turner who delighted us all!
Thank you to Abby Pierce, Brett Daley and The Port Tavern for offering to host this event to benefit an organization that is serving the most vulnerable families in our area. We live in a community that believes in taking care of its own and The Port Tavern is a standard bearer.
I am humbled and inspired by the dedication of ROOF’s Board of Directors: William Abbott, Jeff Bard, Susanne Cameron, Leslie Eckholdt, Tracey Fortier, Juli MacDonald, Martin Madden, Walter Power, Nancy Purcell and Meo Young. Roof will continue, with the support of our community, providing safe, transitional housing to local families.
