YW thanks sponsors, donors, volunteers

To the editor:

On Wednesday, March 30, 130 community members attended the YWCA Greater Newburyport third annual Engaging Communities Luncheon that focused on Health and Wellness: Life Beyond Breast Cancer. Guest speaker Dr. Jane E. Mendez provided an insightful overview from a brief history of breast cancer treatment to specific statistics about different ethnic groups. She reminded the audience that early detection is still the best weapon against breast cancer, and therefore, improving access to screening and continuing the very public conversation about breast cancer will lead to more survivors. The event netted $30,000 for the programs and services of our organization, whose mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

We would like to thank the lead sponsors of the event: Silver: Kim Williams and Trevor Miller, The Institution for Savings Bank, The Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank and one anonymous donor; Benefactors: Eastern Bank Foundation, Matter Communications, Michelle & John Morris, The Provident Foundation and TD Bank; Patrons: Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Elder Service Plan of the North Shore, Green Jean's Garden Design. Supporters included Dolan Financial Services, Joppa Fine Foods and Valverde Massage.

For in-kind donations, we thank Steve Cahill for an awesome video about our ENCORE program; Ashley Plante of New Media Associates for design of event materials; TCS Communications for audio visual assistance; Nunan's and Greenery Designs for flowers; Sir Speedy Waltham for printing the program; Seaport Signs for a banner; and Vinwood Caterers for dessert.

We also want to recognize our honorary chairperson, Jeanette Beltran, director of community initiatives for MA Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and our Community Champions, Raelene Kukene of Newburyport and Nancy McGonegal of Beverly, for their efforts on behalf of women living with breast cancer in our community.

Last, but not least, we would like to thank our event committee for their time and talents: Jane Moran, Charna Cummings, Nicole Chabot, Meaghan Gibbs, Ellie Davis, Carol LaRosa, Pat Tobin and Ilene Harnch-Grady.
