Boiling sea water for salt a waste of fuel

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Regarding the Jan. 31 article entitled “Salty Harvest”: The traditional way to get sea salt was to admit sea water into large, shallow flats and allow the energy from the sun to aid the evaporation of the water, leaving the salt behind to be harvested.

Boiling sea water to get the salt requires a lot of fossil fuel (probably natural gas) and seems an excessive and frivolous use of this resource just to provide a gourmet seasoning.
