Keep Beth Brodie's murderer in jail

To the editor:

My 15-year-old cousin Beth Brodie was murdered in 1992. She was brutally killed by 16-year-old Richard Baldwin with a baseball bat simply because she did not want to date him.

The reason I am writing is because due to a new law, his sentence could very well be overturned and he may be let free very soon. He was convicted to life without parole as he should have been. Our entire family was altered forever and the idea of Richard Baldwin making parole has only made things more painful for everyone. Beth was a beautiful soul who never got a chance to live her life. Why should he have that chance?

The DA, Jonathan Blodgett, is advocating for us and other families finding themselves in this same awful position. He is fighting to keep these criminals behind bars.

I was only 20 years old when Beth was murdered and my life was never the same. I was in the courtroom for all the proceedings and have not forgotten one word. Richard Baldwin had and has no remorse at all. Before he bludgeoned my cousin with the bat he said, “I always wanted to be a baseball player.” Those words have haunted me for 20 years. When you have a family member get killed in such a heinous way, it is hard to look at things the way you once did.

Beth was blossoming into such a beautiful young lady. She had just become a varsity cheerleader. She truly was a shining star loved by everyone.

Richard Baldwin should never be let out of jail for what he did to her and to all of us. He didn’t just take one life, he took the spirit out of many.
