Mothers club's generosity won't be forgotten

To the editor:

Stephen Clinton and I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the women of the Newburyport Mothers Club for their outpouring of support and their generosity after the passing of my daughter, Kendra Kurth Clinton, in February of 2012.

You may have read the story. Kendra and Stephen Clinton were the proud new parents of Ewan Clinton, who was four months old at the time. Of course, with the sudden loss, we had to quickly figure out his daily needs and the demands were staggering.

Within weeks of this tragic event, the mothers in the club began a year-long effort to make sure Ewan had age-appropriate clothing, toys, books and healthy foods. Despite their busy schedules, they personality delivered evening meals every night to Steve, so that we didn’t have to think about cooking dinner. And they didn’t forget Ewan’s first birthday or Mother’s Day.

From the outset, several mothers extended their reach. We were given honorary memberships to the Mothers’ Club website so that we could search for playgroups, equipment and activities. Ewan and I were invited to delightful children’s parties. And I was given a crib, stroller and car seat along with lovely toys and books to help ease the transition as I shared in the caretaking of Ewan in my own home. If I needed something, all I had to do is ask. And sometimes, the necessary items just showed up on my doorstep. Needless to say, all of this incredible support made it so much easier for both of us to focus on Ewan’s daily care. But it was more than that.

During this time, we met so many young mothers and their families who offered their sympathy for our loss. Without their help and care during this time of great sadness, we would have been overwhelmed as we tried to figure out next steps. From this experience, we have also made new friends who continue to find new ways to surprise us with their generosity.
