Just looking for good commentary

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

A letter from Gail Dow of Salisbury (“If you don’t like column …” March 14) referenced mine of an earlier date regarding Barbara Anderson’s weekly views. My opinion was that the population of Newburyport deserves better. But it was Dow, not I, who made invidious comparison with “Newbury, Rowley, Amesbury, Seabrook and Salisbury” with the inference that they may not be as “sophisticated” and thus more interested in what I deemed Anderson’s “self-indulgent and self-aggrandizing” writing.

Newspapers are for reading and all readers are entitled to opinions, just as are columnists like Anderson, but my variant view brings Dow to call me “… a very angry reader trashing …” Anderson. I take The Daily News seriously and look for good commentary regardless of the writer, and in my view Anderson so often comes up short on that, and I also think this newspaper could do better.

Conservatives like to say people like me should just stop reading things we don’t like, and indeed many readers have said they do ignore Anderson’s weekly petulance. I on the other hand look to see if and when she may provide more rational utterance. Others often add that we should just change channels on TV and, at last, if we don’t like the way things may be going nation-wise at the moment, why don’t we just leave the country?

I do not ask that Dow leave Salisbury or to stop reading anything, but I do wonder what the communities she mentioned above think of her assessment of their tastes and opinions. Certainly she seemed to be representing them.
