Include businesses in plastic bag debate

To the editor:

So Barry Connell and his merry band of progressive do-gooders want to ban plastic bags in Newburyport, with no input from those who will feel its impact the most: local retail businesses.

How about our city councilors including local businesses in debates that affect their well-being, instead of issuing broad-ranging edicts guided by quietly arranged backroom political coalitions and trumpeted from the ivory tower of government as good for us all?

Adopting a more business-friendly environment in our local government would do more good for Newburyport than any social engineering initiatives.

Just a thought ...
