No oil spills with Cape Wind

To the editor:

During the last several days, we have seen a very interesting contrast between attempts at energy production in the Gulf of Mexico and in our own Nantucket Sound. As I write this, it appears an emergency of national proportions is occurring in the Gulf of Mexico, complete with an as yet out-of-control oil spill as well as the deaths of several oil rig workers.

In Massachusetts, Cape Wind (the ultimate NIMBY) appears finally to be on track, thanks to the continuing efforts of Gov. Deval Patrick. Backing Cape Wind was never the politically expedient route, but since 2006 Governor Patrick has been committed to developing Cape Wind, even when this was anathema to many of the Grand Poobahs in his own party.

The Kennedys didn't like it. The wealthy residents of Nantucket, Osterville and Martha's Vineyard (including more than a few who made their fortune in oil) fought with a vengeance. The Republican candidate for governor and Tim Cahill don't like it.

But Gov. Deval Patrick took the smart road. By consistently backing Cape Wind, he has demonstrated his support not only for a green future, but also for making Massachusetts a leader in renewable energy. This will result in jobs, a step towards energy independence, but most importantly, it will never spill oil into our precious waters.
