Holaday a steady hand at the helm

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

I have had the privilege of serving as mayor of Beverly for 18 years. During that time, I have met dozens of mayors who have come and gone. I am writing to share my thoughts with the residents of Newburyport about their good fortune in having a terrific mayor in Donna Holaday. You have shown wisdom in re-electing Mayor Holaday in the past, and I urge you to do so again this November.

Mayor Holaday is always an ardent advocate to assure that the city receives the resources required to meet its needs. I have seen her stand up to Governor Patrick and demand the inclusion of bike and pedestrian lanes in the design of the I-95 bridge project. I have been with her at seminars hosted by the Massachusetts School Building Authority to ensure the best outcome when constructing a new school.

Mayor Holaday is thoughtful and makes an informed case to support her position on issues of importance to the city. I have seen her working with the Coast Guard admiral to successfully achieve Coast Guard City status. As president of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, I have worked with municipal leaders from across the state, and amongst her peers, Mayor Holaday rates as one of the best. She is well-known and well-respected throughout the entire region.

Over the years, Newburyport has changed its mayor frequently. I know firsthand that there is value in continuity. It takes time to build relationships. Newburyport needs Donna Holaday’s experienced and steady hand at the helm.

Newburyport is a great city, and you have a terrific mayor. I urge you to cast a vote to re-elect Mayor Donna Holaday in November. Keep her in office and let her do you proud.
