A hug from Mickey Rooney

To the editor:

With a recent passing of a famous movie star, this story came to mind. It was a beautiful summer day in the early 1950s.

I was an usher at the Strand Movie Theater in Newburyport. As I was showing my next group of guests to their seats, one looked familiar. His bodyguard said to him, “She knows who you are!” The familiar-looking star said to me, “Please don’t tell anyone we are here.” He then shook my hand and gave me a hug. I was just thrilled. His name was Mickey Rooney. I know he had his troubles, but he was a nice man.
