Why do people vote against their best interest?

To the editor:

People will vote for a party that will not raise the minimum wage, although it can’t even meet the basic needs of shelter, food, utilities and health care. They will vote for a party that refused to extend unemployment insurance at Christmas time, which still causes suffering to this day.

Over 800,000 jobs were sent out of the country to slave labor as low as $.25 an hour. People who had worked hard all of their life at manufacturing plants found themselves out of work; and despite daily searching for a job in competition with lines of people for one job, they were unable to get a job. If they were over 50 years, it was even harder, yet unemployment benefits were cut off with no extensions.

Many Republican governors refused to accept government funds for Medicare that caused thousands of lower income people to be without health care. Many of these same politicians do everything they can to bust the unions that created the middle class. Many are against the EPA that tries to protect our health and lives against powerful corporations that pollute our air, land and water. People will vote for a party that cuts off food assistance to hungry families being homeless. HUD is under attack that tries to provide affordable housing.

I don’t understand people who will go to the polls and vote against the interest of themselves and their fellow man. Compassion and love should be the main consideration.
