I'm going to miss those single-use plastic bags

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

But I’m not going to miss knowing that 95 percent of the 100 billion bags used annually in the U.S. end up in our environment.

I’m not going to miss knowing that a plastic bag I used for 15 minutes will last a 100 years in a landfill.

I’m not going to miss seeing single-use plastic bags hanging for years on our trees along our highways.

I’m not going to miss seeing plastic bags along the beach, endangering our birds.

I’m not going to miss knowing that plastic bags in the ocean degrade and end up in the stomachs of our fish and marine life, killing them.

Single-use plastic bags have many attractive and useful features, but due to their longevity, they do not make good disposable products. I’m going to miss those single-use plastic bags but not their long-term harm to our environment.
