To the editor:
I am compelled to refute the "Failure of NCR to protect public" opinion expressed by Amesbury residents on Jan. 24 of this year, relevant to the Seabrook Station nuclear plant.
The degradation of concrete from groundwater is not a direct threat to the operation of the plant, and the fear-mongering concerning a "meltdown" is a bit over the top. The plant has multiple redundant cooling systems in place. Further, in the event of loss of power (extremely unlikely, since they have diesel generators more than equal to the task), the reactor goes into automatic shutdown ... power is not necessary to accomplish this. A key sentence in the opinion expressed is "as far as we know, nothing is being done." Excuse me! I don't believe the operators have the responsibility to inform the public of what repairs are in the works.
Just the fact that the public even knows about the degradation of concrete is proof that the NRC is doing its job of informing the public about concerns relevant to plant operation. Do you know how much water would have to leak into the electrical tunnels to cause a real problem. I do! It would take a tremendous amount. I have seen these cables. I have no qualms about living near this plant, and wouldn't if I lived next door to it. Please do us all a favor and stop with scare tactics.
