A procedure for any art on the Green

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

With good wishes and great respect for Carol Baum’s creativity and enthusiasm, I strongly believe it would be inappropriate to place hers or any other artist’s sculpture at the Lower Green, without first considering other artworks.

There is a standardized procedure of “jurying in” art for exhibition/acquisition. It is a process whereby a selection group is established, criteria are developed for the type of work desired (historical or contemporary motif, among many other examples), announcements are made to alert artists about the opportunity to participate and finally, the selectors choose the art. Perhaps Newbury town officials could consider following such a procedure.

In full disclosure, I worked at the San Diego Museum of Art in California for over 10 years. As the public relations officer, I was privvy to behind-the-scenes administration of an arts organization.
