Join the 'Meatless Monday' movement

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Millions of Americans have made a New Year’s resolution to lose some weight in 2013. One way to achieve this weight-loss goal is to simply eat less meat.

Study after peer-reviewed study reveals that high meat consumption is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Conversely, those who are “semi-vegetarians” typically weigh less and have lower rates of the aforementioned diseases.

A growing number of Americans are using Monday to skip meat, embracing the “Meatless Monday” movement.

Just cutting out meat one day a week can help your health, and there hasn’t been a better time to get started on the meat-free path, as more and more grocery chains are stocking their shelves with delicious meat alternative products, and restaurants are rewriting their menus to be more vegetarian-friendly.

Here’s to a New Year, your health and a new you.
