To the editor:
I would like to give thanks to Anna Jaques Hospital for the wonderful care and treatment I got there on Dec. 26 and for six days after.
I had slipped and fallen backward on two stairs in my daughter’s home, causing extreme pain in my left back. I was taken first to Norwood Hospital, which was near her house. After seven hours in their Emergency Department, I was sent to Brigham and Women’s where they were sure there would be a thoracic doctor, but there was not, since it was Christmas Day. Both places had taken many X-rays, which only showed an injury to the top of my left lung.
Since it was not getting any worse, they let me go back to the house, where I felt quite well for several hours. That night I awoke with severe pains and shortness of breath. I got a ride home to Newburyport and asked to be taken to Anna Jaques Hospital. I was only there less than an hour and a thoracic surgeon, Dr. Oommen from Woburn Associates came in, listened to my chest, ordered X-rays. He made immediate plans to have a tube inserted into my lung as it was filling with fluid.
After this was done, with a minimum of discomfort, I was treated with such patience and care by all who attended to me for the next six days, by nurses and others, I felt like a princess. The thoracic doctors visited me every day. I got pain medication whenever I needed them, and immediate help getting out of bed whenever I called for it. I was on ICU, Special Care and Telemetry floors. I was allowed to have visitors at any hour and for as long as I wanted.
On my last day, I had to have surgery on my lung, and that was carried out with a minimum of pain and discomfort also. I can’t say enough about the kind, wonderful caretakers and gentle treatment I got day and night at Anna Jaques. Being an R.N. myself for 25 years, I appreciated it greatly. Some in my family wanted me to go to a Boston hospital. Was I glad I didn’t!
