Change is needed, but not the NRA plan

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

This letter is in response to David Strand’s letter, “Moo, if you want to,” on Feb. 4. The mayor has called for a compromise on improving the waterfront. COW members have been expressing their opinions regarding the NRA plan, and Mr. Strand has the right to express his.

He is wrong in stating that COW members believe “all development is bad.” On the contrary, we believe that change is needed, but we oppose the NRA’s plan for two large buildings on the site that will be owned or leased by a private developer.

COW has a plan for the waterfront that will be presented to the public soon. Once Mr. Karp starts developing his waterfront properties, there will be buildings on both sides of the NRA land. That, in itself, is all the more reason to keep the waterfront open for the public.

Let us continue the dialogue so that we can reach a consensus on the best course to take.
