---- — To the editor:
Mayor Tom Menino gave a speech last Tuesday evening that promoted pay equity for women. He wants Massachusetts to be first in the nation to reach this goal.
It occurred to me the other day that this goes further than pay equity but rather recognition equity. Do you know what a Gold Award is? Do you know what an Eagle Scout is? Why do you know this?
Well, Bill Clinton was an Eagle Scout; it came up during his run for president. It’s a big deal! It shows commitment, leadership and strong ideals among other things. So why when a woman earns the Gold Award in Girl Scouting is it anonymous? The rigorous qualifies are virtually the same.
Because no one cares what women succeed at, including the Girl Scouts of America? When I called them about this, I was told, “Everyone knows about it!” Well I didn’t, I’ve never heard anyone tout their Gold Award or seen it on a resume or seen Girl Scout promotions about it. Have you? I put it on Facebook and guess what? My friends don’t know about it either.
How can we reach pay equity if women are not given those tools that men have that promote themselves? No wonder we make 77 cents on the dollar.
Let me take a moment to offer congratulations to all Gold Award holders, Eagle Scouts and Ron Fuller for his service to Scouting. We’re very proud of you. It’s a major achievement.
Ron Fuller sold me all of my Scouting gear. Yes, I’m a 10-year Mariner Scout.
