White a valuable addition to Historic Commission

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

With all due respect to Lyndi Lanphear’s opinion (Elect the people who support taxpayers, March 12) regarding the failed Local Historic District and her support of Councilor Sullivan, I found her argument opposing Mayor Holaday’s appointment of Sarah White to the Historic Commission both disturbing and vindictive. Whatever ongoing feud Mrs. Lanphear may have with her neighbor Sarah, using her appointment as her reason to support Councilor Sullivan for mayor is counterproductive and irresponsible.

I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to have worked with Sarah on several committees, including the LHD Study Committee. As the chairwoman of that committee, she was consistently open-minded and thorough in leading us through the committee’s scope of work to which we were appointed by then Mayor John Moak. Her efforts in researching, drafting and presenting the final package to the public and the City Council should never be viewed as a reason for its demise on the floor of the council chambers. Members of the study committee spent considerable time conducting their due diligence to insure that the final product was well vetted and would best represented the historic character of Newburyport.

Regardless of your position on the need for a local historic district or its perceived threat to property rights, Sarah White should be commended for her work. Residents of Newburyport should be proud of having a volunteer who brings the intellect, knowledge of historic architecture and interpersonal skills that Sarah will to the Historic Commission.
