Amesbury firefighters were impressive

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

With a number of firefighters in my family, one would think that I had actually seen them fight a fire, but yesterday (Sept. 17) was the first time I have ever seen a fire in progress.

I received a phone call that my daughter’s home was on fire and rushed to meet her at the scene. I was impressed, to say the least.

First, Jim Nolan, who was off-duty, hurried to the fire after hearing that it was his goddaughter’s address.

He was a calming, comforting presence for my daughter and her husband. Other off-duty police and firefighters came to help. The firefighters, while obviously focused on extinguishing the fire, were careful about not breaking windows or causing more damage to the large building unnecessarily.

My brother, Jim Dion, showed up with coffee, water and cold drinks for police and firefighters. The chief and others took the time to keep neighbors informed as they arrived home. Mayor Kezer stopped by to ask if the families needed any assistance.

While four families are displaced temporarily, nobody was hurt; no pets were lost; and the antique building was saved. Thank you to those I have named and to those whose names I do not know.
