What a difference 50 years makes

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

On Nov. 22 the nation remembered the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy. Although President Kennedy only lived through almost three years of his administration, he presided over our entrance into the manned space program.

When John Glenn became the first American to orbit around the earth, President Kennedy helped celebrate that event by committing the U.S. to landing on the moon. Although the President didn’t live to see it, within six years America did land Americans on the moon.

Now within two years of the Obama administration, President Obama ushered out America’s leadership role in the manned space program by ending the space shuttle program. Now we are dependent on foreign countries to get our astronauts back and forth from the ISS (International Space Station), until private companies can fill that void. Which will be at least another two years.

As far as serving our country, President Kennedy made Americans proud of service to their country, when he made his speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.”

Under the Obama Administration his idea of service to our country is,” Ask not what you can do for your country, but ask what government assistance program you can leech on to.”

What a difference 50 years makes.
