Thanks for a successful NEF Lighthouse Auction

To the editor:

On behalf of the Newburyport Education Foundation (NEF) I’m writing to thank the community for helping to make the 6th annual Lighthouse Auction a very successful event. With the help of dozens of volunteers, hundreds of donors and sponsors the event raised nearly $70,000. The proceeds from this event will go to support our current campaign to complete the restoration of the auditorium at the Nock/Molin Schools.

The Lighthouse Auction is our largest fundraiser and is also an important way for many members of the community to come together to support public education in the city. This event has clearly become a tradition for many households. This year we had a record crowd of nearly 350 attendees at the Masonic Hall on Nov. 16. Many others who couldn’t attend were able to bid online prior to the event.

With that many people, it takes a great facilitator to keep the auction enjoyable and effective. Rob Ouellette, owner of Amesbury Skate & Sport, served as our auctioneer for the second straight year and was fantastic.

Each year I am amazed at the generosity and creativity displayed in the items that are available for guests to bid on. This year the donors and the team that worked with these donors did a brilliant job of creating a wide range of items that had broad appeal.

To execute an event like the auction it takes dozens of volunteers to co-ordinate donations from local businesses, teachers, administrators and classrooms across the district. It also takes a long list of helping hands to promote, organize, set up and administer the actual event. I am grateful to the passion and dedication the 2013 Auction Team displayed in making this year’s auction our most successful yet.
