To the editor:

The holidays in Newburyport are always magical and welcomed by so many people from the greater Newburyport area. We are fortunate to live and work in a city that embraces the many holiday traditions and the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proud to be the facilitator with so many other partners to bring a smile and a twinkle in the eye of children old and young alike. From the day the Christmas tree is put up in Market Square, to the annual Santa Parade, Invitation Nights and Santa's workshop, there are so many that are involved and need to be thanked.

The Chamber would like to publicly thank so many individuals that volunteered their time in one way or another to welcome and embrace the holiday season in Newburyport:

Slow wheels of justice in officer's firing

Should a police officer who was fired for allegedly using excessive force and urging a witness to lie about the incident be allowed to return to the force?
On the surface, we would all say an emphatic "no!"

Unified community college system could help close 'skills gap'

We have 240,000 people looking for work and nearly 120,000 open jobs today in Massachusetts. How can we have so much opportunity available and so many people still looking for a chance?
Business leaders tell me over and over again that it is because the people looking for jobs don't have the skills required. Many of these openings are for "middle skills" jobs that require more than a high-school diploma, but not necessarily a four-year degree. Jobs in medical device manufacturing or as lab technicians or solar installers, for example. And a lot of those forced by the economic downturn to make a change in their careers — people in their 30s or 40s or 50s — don't have the proper training for those jobs. We have a "skills gap."

Speak up against MBTA plans

To the editor:
Why is it that when times are tough, the MBTA sees fit to make it more difficult than ever to access public transportation? More people than ever rely on the T to get to school, work, doctors' appointments, stores, everyday living, and now the MBTA is planning on rate hikes, ending weekend train service altogether, ending train service weekdays after 10 p.m., ending bus routes altogether.

Opposed to relicensing of N-plant

To the editor:
As members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), we, the Amesbury Friends Meeting, believe we are called to be good stewards of the earth.
The destruction of life and the degradation of nature have been, and continue to be, ongoing consequences of the use of nuclear technology, whether through weaponization, accident, natural disaster or mismanagement.

Thanks for N-plant relicensing vote

To the editor:
We are grateful to the Newburyport City Council for its unanimous endorsement of a resolution to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to correct existing safety problems at the Seabrook nuclear power plant before considering relicensing the facility. We are especially appreciative of Councilors Barry Connell, Kathleen O'Connor Ives, Edward Cameron and Robert Cronin for cosponsoring the resolution, and of Mayor Donna Holaday for signing onto the measure. We also appreciate the eloquent comments made by other council members, including councilors Thomas Jones and Richard Sullivan, as well as by members of the community.
