Land for school said to be sand pit

To the editor:

At a meeting with abutters to the Bresnahan School, the mayor announced plans last week to build a three-story school in the playing fields behind the current school. Neighbors who were here in 1947 when the houses were built on Norman Avenue, Murphy Street and Low Street stated that those fields were then a giant sand pit. There were a number of complaints lodged with the builder, K.W. Wolsey and Company, regarding sand blowing over from the fields.

The mayor should take note that the existing sandy soil on those fields does not present a good bearing capacity for a three-story building. The mayor's plans should factor additional costs into their estimates and revise the estimated additional taxes that we will be paying.

The Wolsey Company went bankrupt in 1954.
