Our tax dollars at work

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Please allow me to share some good news about our city government.

I received a quick response, along with real action, on a safety concern I brought to Ward 3 Councilor Robert Cronin recently.

I noticed that the streetlights on Parker Street near the train station were not bright enough to let drivers see the many people walking there during rush hour in the dark. I sent an email to Mr. Cronin the evening of Monday, Jan. 14, and received a reply from him early the next morning.

Cronin got Councilor Ari Herzog and also Peter Lombardi (director of Policy and Adminisitration) involved. Within a week, Lombardi and Cronin both took the time to let me know that they had gone down there after dark to check out the situation, and decided to “fast track” the installation of two more lights on Parker Street where the rail trail crosses.

I am impressed! Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said, “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society.” Here’s a small, but good example.
