A new approach to gun control

To the editor:

Having just read a story from Fox News titled “Obama slams GOP over gun debate,” President Obama charged “that the GOP in the House of Representatives wasn’t willing to work with him or listen to the American public concerning the issue of gun control.” My research shows that 43 percent of the American population supports more control while 45 percent of us support more enforcement of the laws already on the books. The rest want no gun control restrictions.

President Obama said that “many of the House Republicans live in sharply gerrymandered districts that are very safely Republican and may not feel compelled to pay attention to broad-based public opinion, because what they’re really concerned about is the opinions of their specific constituencies.” Why shouldn’t the House Republicans listen to the people that they represent? Is he saying that the House Democrats don’t listen to the concerns of the people in their districts?

He also said that “he could get 50 percent of the public support for many of his initiatives. I think that there is still shock on the part of some in the GOP that I won re-election.” In my opinion, he may have won the re-election, but that doesn’t make him the dictator and that we the people should just roll over.

The president also said that he had a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that date back for generations. Not only are there hunting traditions, but there is a Constitution to think about, or was he just crossing his fingers when he re-took the oath at his re-election ceremony?

He said that moving forward on the topic means understanding the realities of guns in urban areas. It’s understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting, so gun-control advocates need to do a little more listening than they do in this debate. He’s so condescending here.

In my opinion, I think that we should look at gun control the way the president handled the recent fiscal cliff problem. He just raised the taxes only on those making $450,000 or more. Maybe he could have stricter gun control laws and enforcement in the cities and those affected most by gun violence and leave the rest of us alone.
