Don't blame Republicans for the cuts

To the editor:

I read on the front page of Saturday’s paper a quote from John Tierney, “Sequester cuts to hit elderly first.” Why? Sadly because Tierney and his political likes want the budget cuts to hurt those who are vulnerable and cause alarm. It is the Democrat Senate along with President Obama who have preferred to see these cuts than cuts to their strong political allies.

You ask what could have been cut instead? Here are a couple of things off the top of my head. 1) How about the recent $216 million shipment of 20 F-16, most advanced fighter jets to Egypt, a country that we can no longer depend on to be our ally? 2) Locally, how much did our Governor Patrick cost seniors by requiring that only union shops could bid on the massive I-95 Whittier Bridge project. Anyone who bid on this highway project would have been required to pay prevailing wages, so the question becomes why the requirement for a union contractor? The answer — because the union is a major Democrat contributor. They would rather dole out the money to them and let the elderly be “hit first.”

Obama and the Democrat Senate have not passed a budget in four years! Don’t blame the Republicans, tea party or House. They have been proactive and passed budgets, but the Senate in fear of facing the issues has failed to even bring the issue to the Senate floor for discussion. Have you heard Obama discuss this? Of course not. It’s so much easier to blame the rich for not paying their share of the taxes when they know that if government took 80 percent of the wealth of the top 5 percent of wage earners, it wouldn’t make a dent in our government’s longterm revenue needs.

Our real need is to get rid of our politicians who would rather “talk the talk” than “walk the walk.” Let’s hope the sequester puts a squeeze on some of their spending.
