Connecting Obama supporters, LHD backers

To the editor:

I’m not remembering the letter that appeared in The News a couple of weeks ago with absolute precision, but it went something like this: “Did you ever notice that all of the houses with LHD signs also have Obama signs? That shows how out of touch with reality these idiots are.”

I have a couple of reactions to this:

1. It is absolutely not the case that all LHD supporters voted for Obama or are registered Democrats. The LHD proposal is a strategic measure intended to give us local control over the destiny of the city. As James Shanley said at a recent public meeting, “It’s an insurance policy” that gives us protection in advance against the poor behavior of people who don’t care how their actions affect their neighbors or the town as a whole.

2. However, let’s presume for the sake of argument that this angry comment is accurate. Well, it turns out that Newburyport went for Obama by something like a 3:2 margin. So, if the city councilors are paying attention to sentiment in the electorate, they might conclude that a vote for the LHD is consistent with the views of the vast majority of our citizens.

Just a thought.
