To the editor:

I just read the article "Boat Camp to clean up beach" (Aug. 12) and I want to say "thank you" to Kate and Rob Yeomans and their group, for making an effort to clean up the Plum Island beach. The amount of trash is disgusting. The majority of the trash consists of beer cans and bottles and fireworks debris (another matter that needs to be addressed), but I've also found chairs, coolers, clothing and even pillows!

The city used to rake the beach daily to keep the mess under control, but that hasn't happened in years. Of course, trash receptacles would be the logical solution, although I'm sure if someone were too lazy to cart their trash off the beach, they would probably be too lazy to walk 20 feet to put it in a receptacle. Still, it would decrease the mess.

Plum Island is such a gem. It's a shame it's so poorly cared for. Summer is winding down and September is on its way, thankfully. The people and their trash will be gone!

Another year, another downgrade

To the editor:
It's doubtful the message makers in the White House found any humor in the Daily Show's Jon Stewart comparing President Obama to a "tax credit Oprah." While the Comedy Central funnyman is right to diagnose Oprah-style giveaways as a symptom of why Obamanomics is failing, we should look to Major Phil Cannella and George Donner to find the disease.

No need for another CVS

To the editor:
CVS?
I can't believe Newburyport is even considering allowing another CVS in our town.
We just went through the expansion of our existing store in which they misplaced two small businesses in order to "better service" our community.

Another way to show pets love

To the editor:
One more thought regarding showing cats, dogs, ferrets and other pets some love:
Never, ever, ever place a "free to good home" ad in the paper or elsewhere. These vulnerable animals often end up in situations that are anything but good, and often not a home at all.
