I also support the recent letters to the editor regarding the naming of the high school football field.
In the spring of 1964, a deadlocked School Committee elected a new football coach. Jim Stehlin quickly changed the culture of Newburyport High School football. He brought with him the gold helmets and quickly ushered in a golden era of successful teams that were embraced by the whole Newburyport community.
More importantly, Coach Stehlin introduced us to words like class, pride, attitude, teamwork and accountability. He taught us lifelong lessons that I personally still carry with me today.
This process of naming the football field The Jim Stehlin Field is not to diminish or take away from the historic stadium name, World War Memorial Stadium. It is to honor a man who has touched so many lives as an administrator, teacher, coach and friend.
The Jim Stehlin Field at World War Memorial Stadium sounds like a good fit to me.
