To the editor:
Election Day, Nov. 5, is next week! I have been thinking a lot about what I am looking for from our next mayor to lead our city for the next four years. I voted for Donna Holaday in the past and will do so again in this coming election. Why? I looked at some of her accomplishments during the past four years and continue to be impressed by her performance. She has led the fight to win support for the school/senior center projects; generated new revenue sources to pay for repairs to sidewalks and public parking lots; and secured over $50 million from state, federal and other resources for various projects. At the same time, she has kept the city’s budget on solid footing.
What I am looking for from the next mayor of this city is the following:
Someone who has the ability to manage the day-to-day operations.
Someone who is smart enough to plan for the future so we are prepared for the unexpected.
Someone who can work with a wide variety of residents, businesses and elected officials.
Someone who has the courage to make tough decisions that others have kicked down the road.
Someone who works hard at managing the city.
To me, Donna Holaday has shown from her past accomplishments that she can do all of these things and more. She is definitely the kind of person I want for my next mayor and, if this sounds like the kind of mayor you think Newburyport needs, then the choice will be clear on Nov. 5.
