To the voters: It's time for a change

To the editor:

Once again it’s time to go to the polls and vote. Once again, according to those candidates who have talked to the voters, primary concern is commercial development of the waterfront. And once again we have two mayoral candidates with different opinions.

The challenger Dick Sullivan, knowing the importance of this issue, not only promised if elected, there will be no commercial development on the waterfront, but will use his power as mayor to return these properties to the city and people of Newburyport. A promise we will certainly hold him binding to if elected.

Our present mayor, Donna Holaday, running for her third term, is in favor of “limited” development on these properties. Two years ago she promised if elected there would be no commercial development. When the NRA presented their plans, including condos, shops, underground parking, the mayor forgot her campaign promise and fully supported their agenda. When having the opportunity to appoint a member to the NRA, she chose one who favors using commercial development on the waterfront. This was another insult to us who voted for her. Now she favors “limited commercial development,” which could mean anything except “open waterfront.” These actions remind me of the saying, “Lie to me once, shame on you, lie to me twice, shame on me.”

Now another surprise has surfaced. The NRA has stated failing support for their plans by those seeking office has resulted in no more action on their part until after the election. Do they think if Sullivan is elected their future is in doubt, and if Mayor Holaday is elected, it’s business as usual? Why else would they make such a political statement? We as voters have two options: If you want an “open waterfront,” vote for Dick Sullivan. If you want commercial development, vote for Donna Holaday. I voted for Mayor Holaday in the last election; her words and actions since then has me feeling she cannot be trusted. I will vote for Dick Sullivan. I hope and trust those reading this column will realize my opinions are based on facts and truths.
