Mullins deserves a seat on the council

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Almost everyone who knows Sheila Mullins also knows she belongs on the Newburyport City Council. She’s not some newcomer looking for fame on Monday night local television. Mullins has been hard at work for Newburyport citizens for the 15 years I’ve known her. We met through Citizens for Environmental Balance, a small group concerned about the Interstate 95 right of way (now the Little River Nature Trail), the Crow Lane landfill capping (still in progress), the former industrial property on Hale Street (now conservation land) and many other local issues.

Mullins is a familiar face at countless meetings of the City Council, Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, etc., keeping herself and other citizens informed about what’s happening behind the scenes. (Unfortunately, local newspapers can not afford to report on all the municipal meetings.) As a result, Mullins knows more about the inner workings of city government than many local politicians who have been in office for years.

She is smart, practical, articulate and tireless in her efforts to find the truth about the issues and to promote decisions that benefit us, the local residents. At the same time, she’s practical and knows the limits of government, budgetary and otherwise. It’s high time voters give her a seat on the council. They won’t regret it.
