To the editor:
I want to thank the people of Newburyport for their overwhelming support on Election Day. I’m grateful to 22 percent of the electorate (and 46 percent of those who voted) for filling my oval. To everyone who greeted me at their doors, invited me into their homes, answered their ringing telephones and busy email accounts, asked to display and hold signs, wrote letters to the editor and contributed in varying ways, thank you. The list is long and they know who they are.
To Olga MacFarlane, Ann Ormond, Peter Falconi, Kim Gobbi, and John Macone: Thank you for organizing at-large candidate forums and asking probing questions. Many residents told me they enjoyed watching the forums both in-person and online, and thanks to Sarah Hayden and her PortMedia crew; and reading The Daily News profile of me, and thanks to Dyke Hendrickson.
To the mayor and my fellow councilors: I look forward to a fruitful relationship and working on issues that the people asked me to do, such as fixing our eroding beaches and readying against rising seas, ending the landfill saga, improving Storey Avenue zoning, and keeping the central waterfront as open as possible. I am committed to bridging the gap between City Hall and the city.
To the School Committee: With Superintendent Viccarro in her new role, I look forward to working together and with the community regarding pending changes in buildings, playgrounds and infrastructure. Let’s bring back programs and keep costs low.
To residents: My door remains open for conversations and questions. I am very active online, but I also like the telephone and meeting in person. Please visit me at http://councilorariherzog.com for contact information on all of the above.
Again, thank you for re-electing me to a third term as your councilor at large. I appreciate your faith in me. Let’s put aside our differences and work together.
