Gomez: GOP/TP trial balloon

To the editor:

After the Republicans’ major defeat in the last national elections, including a resounding mandate for President Obama to his second term, they conducted an “autopsy” of their campaigns to find out what went wrong. Having disappointed most every major category of voters: women, Blacks, Hispanics, Independents, blue collar, college educated, under 30, gay, retired, etc., they sought to redefine their party and make direct appeals to those voting blocs they had lost the support of.

So goodbye tea party, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and friends, the Evangelicals, the Moral Majority, anti-feminist and gay marriage activists, racists, military interventionists, anti-environmental talk and on and on. All this plus hoping voters forgot the horrid eight years of the last GOP presidency under W. Bush that trashed our nation’s economy, ran up the largest deficit in our history to that time and involved us in an illegal 10-plus year war in Iraq (“The Congress {Not the President} shall have power: To declare War, Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water” — The Constitution, Section 8).

Enter Mr. Gomez whose first foray into politics is to become one of the world’s most powerful 100 people — a U.S. Senator. I like him as a candidate. He is young, masculine, intelligent, confident, has a charming personality, is a self-made wealthy man, bilingual like my German grandparents were, allegedly open-minded on social issues, a veteran; and if he were running as an Independent I would certainly vote for him.

Unfortunately, he has chosen to run as a Republican. The same party who brought us Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin as their totally serious candidates for president and vice president. Not to mention the clown bus full of mostly absurd losers who were the GOP/TP presidential primary hopefuls. In addition, they are a party that has always openly hated and sought to undermine the welfare and rights of feminists, Hispanic immigrants, non-whites, non-Christians, gun control advocates, environmentalists, gays, stem cell and global warming researchers, etc.
