Questionnaire's mailing raises questions

To the editor:

Within the past few weeks I received a mailing from the City of Newburyport Department of Public Health and another mailing from the Department of Public Services.

In each of these mailings, the Citizens for Sustainable Bagging organization’s questionnaire was featured prominently. They appear to be some kind of political action/issue advocacy group.

Are they affiliated with the Office of Recycling and Energy? According to the mailings, they collect their correspondence at City Hall.

It seems that the Citizens for Sustainable Bagging organization is being supported by our tax dollars.

Is the city supporting this group’s objectives with our tax money? Was funding authorized by the City Council?

Has the city taken a position whereby the city somehow endorses their issue?

And, finally, is there an open avenue for other political action/issue advocacy groups to receive city support/endorsement for their advocacy efforts?

I would hope that Mayor Holaday will let it be known how this can be accomplished.
