To the Editor:
I saw my name in The Daily News today (Health director addresses council’s concerns, July 17, page 1). It was about my popcorn machine at the Screening Room. I wished somebody had spoken to me first but nobody did so.
Sometimes I think I should just “go French.” In French movie theaters food is not allowed. The sights, sounds, smell of it all is nasty, they think. Yes the health department told me to stop cooking popcorn until I upgraded to sinks, etc. Well first I did keep a messy popcorn kettle. A few customers joked that it added flavor. They were not French, of course.
Frankly there are not enough pages here to list all the food issues facing our society. Start with e-coli in vegetables, meat recalls, frankenfood, the fast food/obesity epidemic, the industrialization of food, the under funding of the inspectional system. Did you know that only 2 companies produce almost every bite of chicken we eat?
The point is that our local authorities are not lone wolves. They are struggling on our behalf and deserve our support. If anybody had asked before mentioning my name I would have said that I was embarrassed to keep a messy machine, that I resolve to do better and that I support our local efforts to keep a lid on food safety. These people are our front line for food safety.
Give them a break or go French.
