Sing a song of the waterfront blues

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Well, it’s that time of year again, summer in full swing, and Yankee Homecoming nearly upon us. I thought this might be a good time to dust off my guitar from my protesting-paid-parking-days and head on down to the waterfront with a retooled version of a summertime classic. My apologies to Eddie Cochran for taking liberties with the cadence, lyrics and length of his song “Summertime Blues.”

It’s time to make a noise,

It’s time to be con-cerned,

About the NRA’s plans

So far what we have learned

Well, they think off the sale we’ll make out like kings

Well, I wonder who they think they’re really fooling.

Try to stop this plan, from ever going through

Or there won’t be a cure for the waterfront blues

Well, the buildings might have parking underground

They’re gonna test the soil to see if it is sound

My honest opinion, I think that is in-ane

To have that type of parking in a FEMA flood-plain

But the NRA tells us the city needs the money,

I think it’s ironic, I think it’s rather funny,

When tourists can’t find a de-cent parking spot

That’s a loss of revenue, and it could be alot

(repeat stanza)

When the mayor ran, she said there’d be no buil-dings

She led us to believe that this was a happ-y en-ding

Well, she did a flip-flop, and that got my goat

Needless to say, she won’t be gett-ing my vote

To the NRA, we gave our pre-senta-tion,

Which only crea-ted an air of agita-tion

Although we re-instated we don’t like the dirt lots

Their minds were quite made up, tied up in “nots”

(Repeat stanza)

Well, time to head home, I think I will take a walk along the boardwalk before I go. Hey, you know, I was just wondering, has anyone asked the question, “Where are the employees going to park?” once those parking spaces are swallowed up by buildings, and where are the dumpsters going to go? The A/C units? Handicapped accessible ramps? Will the noise from the trucks and the dust from the construction drive us all nuts? Things to think about when you are strolling along our lovely — and for now peaceful — waterfront!
