In praise of local teachers

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

During the past two years, I have been a substitute teacher in two local schools: the Brown School and River Valley Charter School.

In my younger days, I studied to become an early childhood teacher. I attained my goal and taught for two years in New York City in Harlem and on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Life circumstances, and choices I made, took me away from my chosen career.

As I return to teaching, I marvel at the patience, humor, creativity and kindness of our teachers. Though many circumstances in their profession are not ideal, their devotion is impressive. They delight daily in their students. Their belief in the children’s goodness and their ability to attain their goals is unwavering. They show them love and respect daily.

A teacher’s day does not end at 3 p.m. Nor are their supposedly long vacations work-free. Good teachers are always learning — taking workshops, furthering their education and bringing their new knowledge to their students to enhance their lives.

Teaching young children is such important work. Our world depends upon it being done well.

My respect, admiration and gratitude toward teachers grows each time I encounter them.
