Help us to honor Bob Welch

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

A group of close friends is interested in honoring Bob Welch by naming a room at Newburyport High School for him. A Naming Opportunity program, the Make Your Mark campaign through the Newburyport Education Foundation (NEF), has approved the committee’s request to create a lasting tribute to honor Bob Welch. The NEF will prominently display a handsome bronze plaque outside the Fitness Center in the high school gymnasium.

The Friends of Robert Welch Committee has begun a campaign to raise the necessary funds to make this a reality and hope to complete the fundraiser by the end of May.

Bob Welch came to Newburyport in 1959 and spent his entire professional career as an educator in the Newburyport school system. He began his career as a junior high school science/physical education teacher and coach. Within two years, he became the physical education director for all the public schools in the city. Mr. Welch provided exceptional leadership during his tenure as a teacher, coach and administrator. He was a pioneer for many of the advancements in the physical education and health curriculum in the schools.

Some of Bob Welch’s accomplishments include the following:

Organized a curriculum around Project Adventure including outdoor education and recreational lifetime sports.

Developed a program of lifetime fitness and health, including testing and evaluation.

Named city-wide director of intramural sports.

Organized a Boys’ Leaders Club program within the physical education curriculum at the high school.

Built one of the first outdoor hockey rinks in Newburyport with community help and student volunteers.

Established the first tennis program at NHS.

Coached tennis, football, baseball and basketball and was named coach of the year twice.

Named to the NHS Wall of Fame in 2003.

Send contributions to the Robert Welch Naming Opportunity Fund, c/o Newburyport Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1002, Newburyport, MA 01950.

This naming opportunity fundraiser will not only recognize a prominent and deserving Newburyport citizen with a permanent plaque attached to a room in his honor at Newburyport High School, but will also allow the NEF to use some of the funds to help make a difference and enhance the quality of public education throughout the Newburyport school system.

The members of the Friends of Robert Welch Committee wish to thank all friends, fellow workers, former athletes and students for their support in this project to honor Bob Welch for his dedication and commitment to excellence for the students and the city of Newburyport.
