To the editor:
I have had the privilege of serving with Katy O’Connor Ives on the Newburyport City Council until her well-deserved election as our state senator. During our time working together Katy repeatedly demonstrated her grasp of issues and the realities of how it would impact the community as a whole. She always listened closely and thoughtfully to all points of view. Refreshingly, as she has moved onto greater duties and responsibilities, Senator O’Connor Ives has continued this holistic approach to governance.
She is not a Monday to Friday legislator but rather a 24/7 advocate and problem-solver. Just this past Easter weekend she worked tirelessly to craft the proper and timely response to the odor issue that continues to plague our landfill.
This is the type of action you get from Senator O’Connor Ives: addressing people’s issues in real time, which is, of course, what you hope for in elected officials but rarely get.
Senator O’Connor Ives has worked tirelessly on issues that matter to Newburyport and the district: school funding reform including state monies for their presently unfunded mandated programs, transportation initiatives to allow communities to fix roads and sidewalks. She is also leading a statewide Senate investigation into the abuse, addiction and treatment of controlled substances. These are all issues that affect our quality of life both as a community and individually.
I have strongly supported Senator O’Connor Ives in the past and my support for her and her work will not diminish in the future.
