'Living for 32' to be screened Saturday

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Gun violence in this country continues to be an epidemic and our national leaders continue to do nothing. There have been roughly 60 school shootings since Newtown. Roughly 30,000 American citizens die each year from guns. Comparing our statistics to those of other industrialized countries is staggering.

The good news is that many American citizens are no longer being complacent. Grass-roots organizations have sprouted up in all 50 states. A new group called Everytown For Gun Safety, a coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, faith leaders, law enforcement officials, gun violence survivors and more, has recently formed and vows to pressure our elected officials to vote the way the majority of Americans want them to, not the way the NRA does.

Colin Goddard, a survivor of the Virginia Tech Massacre, is part of the new coalition. On Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Newbury Town Library, members of Moms Demand Action will be screening the film “Living for 32,” which chronicles Colin’s journey from victim to advocate. The members will lead a discussion after the film and be available with handouts and resources and suggestions for how people who care about this issue can get involved.
