The importance of keeping trees healthy

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

April was the month in which National Arbor Day and the 44th anniversary of Earth Day were celebrated. As we watch spring emerge, it is important for all of us to think about the positive impact of a green environment — the aesthetic as well as the environmental and economic impact.

Trees play an especially important role in our green environment. As trees grow, they help stop global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

Trees provide many benefits to all of us every day — they provide cooling shade, block cold winter winds, attract birds and wildlife, purify our air, prevent soil erosion, clean our water and add grace and beauty to our homes and communities.

On Friday, April 25, Valley Tree of Groveland and Green Jean’s Design and Horticulture Services took part in a statewide volunteer event, the Massachusetts Arborists Association’s Arbor Day of Service. Valley Tree spent the day pruning the elm allee at Bartlet Mall while Green Jean’s assisted volunteers from the Newburyport Tree Commission in pruning street trees planted over the past six years.

We believe this was a great way for us to give back to the City of Newburyport and to draw attention to the importance of proper tree care. Our fellow tree care companies across Massachusetts were doing the same thing in their hometowns on the same day.

It is incumbent on everyone in our community to find ways to enhance the green spaces around us and to consider their own personal responsibility as stewards of the environment.
