An anecdotal ordinance on plastic bags

The goal of this ban was best encapsulated by one councilor at the end of the meeting, who stated that the ordinance was not going to “cure the world’s ails” but his intention was to “set an image” for Newburyport as a socially responsible place.

If you want an activist City Council that passes symbolic gestures with indeterminate consequences, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you would rather have your City Council spend its time on local issues that have known and immediate positive impacts on you and your family (i.e., sidewalks, roads, education, taxes, athletic fields and recreational facilities), contact your city councilor and councilors at-large to tell them of your opposition.
