Police department always on guard

To the editor:

I have had the joy of living in the Town of Salisbury for the past 18 years, 15 of which I worked part-time down at the beach. During these 15 years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe and appreciate the protection and help that the Salisbury police have provided me on various occasions. I have always looked at the police department as top-notch, top-shelf and professional law officers.

They struck me as being people-oriented, they were quite capable of handling any crisis, whether it be a lost child, whose mother was screaming for help and successful in finding the missing child and returned to his mother.

Because of changing times, the present time is quite different, sometimes being very violent, in which case the police officers would have to act accordingly to subdue any possible threat to the public safety.

On one occasion a call was made to the police department about a possible robbery taking place at a local business because the individual was observing a gun being pointed at an employee and didn’t know whether it was a real gun or not. It was strongly suggested by the caller that a police officer should come by just to make sure everyone was safe.

Within minutes a show of force showed up and subdued any attempt, real or otherwise, a threat that could have been devastating to the employee. Fortunately, the situation that originally existed was a little misconstrued by the caller only because he did not realize whether it was a real threat. In any case, fortunately all ended peacefully without anyone getting hurt.

All I can say is that this display of force shows us that yes, the Salisbury Police Department is nothing less than vigilant.

Protectors of the peace, true to their profession, one word sums it up: on guard 24/7.
